Trail Building in the Snow

The morning started brightly when we met the legends from Iconic trails to unload the machine and bulk out the dirt for the Mama and Baby Bear re-shape. However on the stroke of 1pm just as the first of the volunteers arrived the rain set in. A solid crew of 16 or so still stuck at it in increasingly wet and cold conditions although the snow/sleet was a bit much. There is no better time to work on drainage than when it’s hosing it down!

The big change is the last two table tops on Mama Bear have gone to be replaced by one jump. There was never really enough room in there for 2 jumps, especially with the speed gained. This resulted in jumps that were too short and close together and not consistent with the trail. The new jump that replaces them is bigger but is a lot more predictable. There is more time to set up, it has a huge landing and it is a better progression for those wanting to try Papa Bear. We also went back and built up the two smaller step downs in the middle of this trail so there are still plenty of features.

Baby Bear then got a re-fresh top to bottom. It is still nice friendly table tops all the way down, but the take offs are now longer (ie less bucky) and the later jumps a touch lareger fitting with the speed you carry.

BABY BEAR AND MAMA BEAR ARE CLOSED. The newly dug dirt needs to dry out. A lot. Riding them now will damage the trails and create work for our volunteers.

Huge thank you to Mike, Hamish and Jacob from Iconic trails for giving up their Sunday to help out. Capital MTB Shuttles for paying for all the fuel. Three Mills Bakery for the much needed hot sausage rolls and Capital Brewing Co. for the cold beers for anyone who could still feel their hands.
We promise the weather will be better at the next day!
