The Majura Pines Trail Alliance are the volunteer group who build and maintain of the mountain bike trails in the Majura Pines, Canberra.

The Majura Pines are some the oldest and most famous mountain bike trails in Canberra. However these trails were closed for 2 years between 2012 and 2014 whilst the Majura Parkway was constructed and extensive thinning of the pines was undertaken. Due to these works many of the old trails were destroyed or very well hidden.

The Majura Pines Trail Alliance have contributed over 1000 hours of volunteer work to build new and recover old trails as well as adding a high quality dirt jump park. There are now over 20km of mapped and sign posted trails for all abilities at Majura Pines.

The Majura Pines Trail Alliance continue to construct more new trails, in addition to maintaining those in exitence. Help is always welcomed at build days. To sign up please send an email to majurapinestrails@gmail.com.

Touching Cloth OPEN

The newest trail at Majura Pines, Touching Cloth, it open to ride. This trail is a technical descent that utilises some the oldest, rockiest downhill trails at Majura before rewarding you with a brand-new fast and fun finish. Some sections of the trail are still quite soft but are good to ride on. The trail will only get faster as it firms up.

Our thanks to the following people who made this new trail possible: The original DH trail builders at Majura; people like Bill Dengate, Makin Trax who kindly donated two days of their time and the volunteers who helped out at our trail day last month.

The easiest way to find Touching Cloth is to take the new link track from the top of Point Brake that crosses Rock Lobster. Head along the fire road for about 50m and then Touching Cloth starts on your right. Download the latest trail map from our website or the free phone app, TrailForks.

Remember, if you ride at Majura and aren’t able to help at trail days, you can do your bit by making a contribution to our trail fund via the pay pal link on the right of this page.

2017 Logging Schedule

Over recent weeks MPTA has been in consultation with ACT Parks, Forestry and ACT Government Ministers regarding the ongoing logging schedule for Majura Pines. Majura Pines is a working pine forest nearing the end of its cycle, and due to the safety issue of falling trees experienced last winter, selected forestry operation are going to occur later this year.

Logging operations are scheduled to start in October 2017 in the compartment containing Bogs & Logs and Mudhoney as well as the southern most area containing Love Shack, Shark Island and the lower Planet Claire. These two compartments were the worst affected in the extreme weather last year with a large number of trees continually falling and are most in need of urgent renewal. A sympathetic harvesting method will be utilised to conserve existing trails as much as possible. Further logging operations will occur in stages in 2022 and 2027 to allow for sufficient regrowth in the cleared compartments between operations.

MPTA are very pleased with the outcome of discussions and look forward to working with the land managers in all future planning.

Special thanks to ACT Parks and Conservation Service, Mick Gentleman MLA, Shane Rattenbury MLA for your continued support of this amazing recreation area and tourist destination.

Touching Cloth Trail Build

Majura Pines Trail Alliance are building our most challenging trail yet. Incorporating some steep and rocky old Majura singletrack, riders will be rewarded with a fun new lower section, designed by Makin Trax. 'Touching Cloth' could become the best trail at Majura.

Lots of help is needed to smooth and compact the new trail. If you like trails that go down - and who doesn't? - then come and lend a hand for a few hours. Meet at the bottom of Rock Lobster at 0830 on Sunday 18th June. The nearest place to park is the Mackenzie St car park in Hackett. You will need to ride in from one of the car parks. You'll want your bike to try the trail afterwards anyway.

Snacks and refreshments will be provided courtesy of Hackett IGA Plus Liquor.

Don't forget to bring:

  • plenty of water
  • hat and sunscreen
  • food
  • gloves
  • sturdy footwear
  • eye protection
  • your favourite trail tools - rakes, mattocks, shovels, hoes, etc

Trail Spring Clean (in Autumn)

Majura Pines Trail Alliance will be holding a general trail maintenance day this Sunday, 21st, from 0830 to 1200. The goal is to clear all the drains of fallen pine needles, drag fallen branches out of creeks etc and generally make the trails ready for the wetter weather over winter. A little bit of work now will go a long way. Significant rain is forecast for Friday and Saturday (but dry on Sunday) so we should have no problem finding the puddles that need clearing. This will not be hard digging - more of a walk of the trails with rake in hand.

Meet at 0830 at the MPTA storage container on the main fireroad (Monterey Rd) about 200 metres south of the Mudhoney - Mr Squiggle junction. The closest place to park is the winery gate (near end of Bombora). Tools and refreshments will be provided by Hackett IGA Plus Liquor. We will work until around midday.

Don't forget to bring:

  • plenty of water
  • hat and sunscreen
  • food
  • gloves
  • sturdy footwear
  • eye protection
  • your favourite trail tools - rakes, mattocks, shovels, hoes, etc
